Some of the most common vehicles are adventure vans, typically all-wheel drive models either converted to an overland vehicle at a specialty shop, built out DIY style, or purchased as a complete vehicle. Here we look at these vans and consider why a Terranova might be a better fit for those looking for their next overlanding vehicle: - [The GMC EV HUMMER EarthCruiser’s Journey to Chicago](https://earthcruiser.com/the-gmc-ev-hummer-earthcruisers-journey-to-chicago/): Everyone was sceptical… - [Iphone Camera Tips with Terranova Owner Bruce Costa, Part 2](https://earthcruiser.com/iphone-camera-tips-with-terranova-owner-bruce-costa-part-2/): Yellowstone Boardwalk - photo by Margie Costa - [iPhone Camera Tips with Terranova Owner Bruce Costa](https://earthcruiser.com/iphone-camera-tips-with-terranova-owner-bruce-costa/): Greetings, Earthcruiser owners! But even if it’s not possible, and let’s be honest, it’s not usually an easy feat for anyone, perhaps consider taking a small step towards that journey. While bucket lists are fun and inspiring, the pressure of thinking of a trip as a “once in a lifetime” experience and making them epic in length (and budget) can feel paralyzing. - [Made-To-Fit Molle Panels](https://earthcruiser.com/made-to-fit-molle-panels/): Made-To-Fit (MTF) MOLLE (modular light-weight load-carrying equipment) Panels are a great way to add custom storage and organization capabilities to any flat surface. This means we don't have to carry large amounts of fuel or have massive heavy battery banks that require a larger payload chassis. These design fundamentals of doing more with less have always led to lighter-weight builds and greater MPG (miles per gallon). Range and aerodynamics are extensively considered in the exterior shape and design lines for EarthCruiser products as well. - [Camp Recipe: Chimichurri Flank Steak on the Fire](https://earthcruiser.com/camp-recipe-chimichurri-flank-steak-on-the-fire/): This month's recipe comes from John Stafford, Sales Executive, and CORE Business Development Manager. It begins as a trickling stream in the highland plains of Angola, growing in volume as it travels south till it becomes the powerful Okavango River. 2.5 trillion gallons of water follow this path every year. Then, something unusual happens. The river begins to spread and dissipate, becoming an alluvial fan. Covering 2,500 square miles, this region is a paradise for wildlife. Its crystal-clear waters form channels and islands home to herds of elephants, buffalo, rhinos, hippos, and the predators that hunt them like lions and wild dogs. One hundred fifty miles downstream, the water simply disappears, lost to thirsty plants and animals, and evaporation. - [Energy Systems: Production, Usage and Storage](https://earthcruiser.com/energy-systems-production-usage-and-storage/): Energy systems on our vehicles is a big topic. My name is Austin, I am the Lead Design Engineer with an Energy Systems background here at EarthCruiser. We’ve spent years studying and testing energy production, storage and usage optimization. We get questions daily from our community on how our systems work. While I think there are other ways to describe the details better, I found that the water bucket analogy is one of the best ways to understand the basics of a small self-contained system like you find on an EarthCruiser. - [EarthCruiser USA Expands CORE (Commander Off Road Equipment) High-performance 4×4 chassis designed for utility and commercial use](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-usa-expands-core-commander-off-road-equipment-high-performance-4x4-chassis-designed-for-utility-and-commercial-use/): High-performance 4x4 chassis designed for utility and commercial use - [Introducing the Limited Series: “EarthCruiser Founders Edition”](https://earthcruiser.com/introducing-the-limited-series-earthcruiser-founders-edition/): If you follow EarthCruiser, then the names “Lance and Michelle” are not new. Bend, Oregon, has the reputation as one of the most dog-friendly towns in the U.S.A., and we fit right in at our chosen home. From founders Lance and Michelle’s trusty German shepherd, Strewth, to employee and owner pets ranging from chihuahuas, labradoodles, huskies to rescues (and even the occasional cat), it’s a rare day at headquarters that doesn’t involve an animal or two. Pets and overlanding seem a match made in heaven. Who doesn’t love bringing their furry companions with them to enjoy and explore the outdoors? Here we offer a few tips to make sure both you and your pets get the most out of your overlanding adventures: - [EarthCruiser Adventure Preview: Montana Winter Adventure](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-adventure-preview-montana-winter-adventure/): One of our owner's favorite features of EarthCruiser vehicles is their true four-season capabilities. This means the winter months, when parks and trails are least crowded, are open to enjoy and explore. The Montana Winter Adventure has been specially designed to build confidence in winter driving, recovery, and camping skills, along with experiencing private, exclusive access to one of the world's most iconic national parks. - [Honoring Our Veterans – Nationwide and at Home](https://earthcruiser.com/honoring-our-veterans-nationwide-and-at-home/): Did you know a good portion of our EC crew have served in the military? The skills and experiences that Veterans gained in their years of service and bring to EarthCruiser provide invaluable strengths to our business that we all benefit from - and we are so grateful for. - [Bigger Isn’t Always Better (Concerning Tires)](https://earthcruiser.com/tires-and-overlaning/): We get asked about tires, specifically tire size, a lot. Joshua B. from our EarthCruiser Engineering Crew and EarthCruiser Founder Lance Gilles, provide two unique perspectives as to why we are very deliberate about the size and weight of the tires we use on our vehicles.   - [Overland Route Planning: How to Design the Perfect Trip](https://earthcruiser.com/overland-route-planning-how-to-design-the-perfect-trip/): It sounds simple enough. You have narrowed down the seemingly endless list of places you'd like to go overlanding and have even figured out when you'd like to go. Now you just need to plan your route. Where do you begin? What resources are available to help with your research? What does an ideal route even look like? Designing a good trip is more than just connecting the dots between the start and finish. If you get it right, you're hitting the area's highlights and some off-the-beaten-path experiences. You're spending just enough time behind the wheel every day to arrive rested and ready to explore, and you're always prepared with enough fuel and supplies. If you get it wrong, you could find yourself running out of gas, feeling tired and stressed, and missing the very things you set out to see. The good news is that are loads of resources available to help you plan your adventure. Here are a few of my tips for creating the perfect itinerary: - [Avoiding Conflict with Wildlife](https://earthcruiser.com/avoiding-conflict-with-wildlife/): “Give him whatever he wants!” my husband shouted as I scrambled out of the path of the angry honey badger. Dust flying, it barreled into the dinner table of our camp in the Okavango Delta of Botswana. Later, I’d find out my husband had actually said, “let him go wherever he wants,” but at the time, complying with the demands of the furry terrorist seemed like a perfectly reasonable directive. - [EarthCruiser Adventure Preview: Great Alaskan Adventure](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-adventure-preview-great-alaskan-adventure/): Next June, EarthCruiser Adventure will head north to the Last Frontier for our first Adventure in Alaska. This is set to be an incredible trip, taking in the best of the state’s jaw-dropping scenery, diverse wildlife, and rugged backroads. I was lucky enough to have grown up in Alaska, my childhood summers spent camping and exploring its wild places, and I can’t wait to share my first home with our owners. - [Why Sand Dunes Make the Perfect Classroom](https://earthcruiser.com/why-sand-dunes-make-the-perfect-classroom-3/): Even if you’re not planning to enter the Dakar Rally or transverse the Sahara any time soon, there is value in getting out in your vehicle in some deep sand. First of all, it’s great fun. It’s a gorgeous and unique environment to explore. Learning how to drive on and navigate through dunes builds skills that translate into safer and better off-road driving that transfers to any low-traction situation. - [Owner Stories: Tim Dalton](https://earthcruiser.com/owner-stories-tim-dalton/): Meet Timothy D., one of the first owners of an EC Terranova based on Shelter Island, New York. Tim is an avid outdoor adventurer, photographer, dive master, fisherman, skier (just to name a few of his hobbies) and beekeeper. Tim brought the EC crew some of his own honey and it was delicious. He wasted no time in getting out and using his vehicle, we were fortunate enough to catch up with him a few weeks ago for this interview.  - [What Responsible Overlanding Means to Me](https://earthcruiser.com/what-responsible-overlanding-means-to-me/): One look at the incredible crowd gathered for the first Overland Expo PNW here in Bend, Oregon, this summer left no doubt that overlanding is currently seeing a tremendous growth in popularity. It seems everyone has discovered the joys of independent vehicle travel through the remote and wild places on our planet, and I couldn’t be happier to see it. This growth in popularity also raises questions about the future of our beloved pastime and way of life. What will this kind of travel look like as more people take to the back roads? How do we ensure we protect these areas for ourselves and the next generation? The words ‘responsible’ and ‘sustainable’ are everywhere in the travel industry, but sometimes they are used without guidelines regarding what they mean in practice. At EarthCruiser, we take these concepts seriously and are constantly asking ourselves how we can best play a part in securing the future of travel and the outdoors. So, what does responsible overlanding look like? It means taking care of the environments we travel through, respecting landowners and other land users, and supporting the people who live in the areas we visit. - [We’re Hiring: Looking for Production Technicians to Join Our Talented Team](https://earthcruiser.com/were-hiring-looking-for-production-technicians-to-join-our-talented-team/): We are grateful for the interest in EarthCruiser and the company growth that it’s brought. As a result, we are aggressively building up our team and have several open job positions for full-time production technicians.  - [Size Does Matter](https://earthcruiser.com/size-does-matter/): We all get waylaid by bright shiny objects and the thought of new technologies which will make things supposedly ‘better, easier, cheaper and more user friendly’.  But really, does what’s on the surface matter as much as why some things are the way they are?  We all know how to do things, but do we know WHY we do them the way we do? - [EarthCruiser and Oregon Army National Guard Partner For Real-World Disaster Relief Overlanding Training With Local Troops](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-and-oregon-army-national-guard-partner-for-real-world-disaster-relief-overlanding-training-with-local-troops/): EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles and their team of expert all-terrain drivers have partnered with the Oregon National Guard (ORARNG) for a specialized training collaboration of tough terrain drills, which troops can encounter when called for disaster relief and emergency response missions. This training program was designed to equip local troops with the practical knowledge of how to problem solve in hands-on trail experiences, and serve as a pilot program for ongoing training. - [Owners Story: August and Jill Wheeler CORE DIY](https://earthcruiser.com/owners-story-august-and-jill-wheeler-core-diy/): For our next Owner Stories installment we had the pleasure of catching up with August and Jill Wheeler, our CORE Vehicles DIY customers. This couple is no stranger to designing and constructing van builds and they’re taking it to the next level with their new project. Read on to learn about the Wheeler’s, how their approaching their CORE build-out, and what others should think about if exploring custom outfitting. - [Why Overlanding is My Favorite Way to Watch Wildlife](https://earthcruiser.com/why-overlanding-is-my-favorite-way-to-watch-wildlife/): I'm not sure which was my first love: wildlife or overlanding. I was fortunate to have grown up in Alaska, with parents in careers that afforded us a few weeks every summer to explore our beautiful home state. As soon as the graduation caps flew in the air, we'd be packing the family vehicle to hit the road. As a kid, my fondest memories were of sleeping in tents and the back of our pickup, exploring new routes, and fishing every stream. If we were lucky, a bear might wander through our campground, a moose may take a drink from the river we were fishing, or a beaver might slap its tail in warning when we inadvertently wandered too close to its lodge. Every trip filled me with wonder and fed my appetite for our natural world. - [EarthCruiser Launches Overland Tours Division: EarthCruiser Adventure](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-launches-overland-tours-division-earthcruiser-adventure/): Guided tours in global destinations created exclusively for EarthCruiser vehicles - [EarthCruiser Adventure Preview: Baja Mexico – San Diego to Cabo](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-adventure-preview-baja-mexico-san-diego-to-cabo/): Mexico’s Baja Peninsula holds a special place for overlanders. Home to the legendary Baja 1000 rally and a classic winter retreat for surfers, divers, and fishermen, the area has attracted travelers for decades. While the casual tourist may be familiar with the region’s resorts, nightlife, and fine dining, those willing to take the time to explore places off the beaten path will discover some of Mexico’s finest hidden gems. Here you may find towering cactus forests, quiet bays home to gentle whale sharks, prehistoric rock art, and hidden mountain hot springs. This week-long trip will explore some of the least visited corners of EarthCruiser's home state. Beginning at Overland Expo PNW, it will include drives over the highest road in the state, over dry lakebed playas, through slot canyons, and over sand dunes. Highlights include a naturalist-led hike of the Fort Rock State Natural area, an exclusive farm-to-table dining experience at a vineyard, and scenic drives through wild and beautiful backcountry. - [EarthCruiser Announces Next-Generation Overland Vehicle Platform](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-announces-next-generation-overland-vehicle-platform/): EarthCruiser Overland Vehicles announced today that its next generation of EXP and FX EarthCruiser models, as well as CORE brand vehicles, will transition to the Isuzu NPR Series Class 4 platform. Tight lines, my friends." - [A Tribute to My Little Girl, Goldy](https://earthcruiser.com/a-tribute-to-my-little-girl-goldy/): I was supposed to write a travel story this month, and this is sort of one, but I just need to make a little ode to my Goldy. Goldy was Lance and my ‘compromise’ dog after we got married. Lance didn’t want a dog, and I did, so we signed up to be puppy raisers for Guide Dogs Queensland…a one-year commitment to ‘raising’ a puppy that could go anywhere, do anything, and not be phased by new experiences. We got Goldy—a small English lab with a big attitude.  - [Isuzu North America Executive Team Visits EarthCruiser](https://earthcruiser.com/isuzu-north-america-visits-earthcruiser/): We were excited to host a team of Isuzu North American Executives at EarthCruiser HQ last month. The driving there is rough and remote. Still, you won’t likely break your vehicle, find yourself stranded, or put yourself in danger. You’ll want to watch for signs of elephants and lions while making camp, but you’ll rarely find yourself too far from a cold beer. Seemingly endless miles of gravel roads provide just enough challenge to build an overlander’s confidence without feeling insurmountable. In short, things work, but traveling there remains a proper adventure - [Trade Shows 2022](https://earthcruiser.com/trade-shows-2022/): Soon the weather will be warming up which means trade show season is fast approaching. Here is a list of events that we plan to be at in the upcoming months. - [CORE Hero Vehicles selected by State of Oregon for Emergency Response Vehicles](https://earthcruiser.com/core-hero-vehicles-selected-by-state-of-oregon-for-emergency-response-vehicles/): CORE, a division of EarthCruiser, was awarded a contract by the Oregon Military Department and the Oregon Office of Emergency Management for a State Preparedness and Incident Response Equipment (SPIRE) grant for emergency response related to flooding. - [Overlanding Recipes: Hearty Oxtail Stew](https://earthcruiser.com/overlanding-recipes-hearty-oxtail-stew/): Oxtail stew is a favorite camp meal of Production Technician Mat Wayte. Mat spent over adecade leading overlanding trips through Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. He loves thisdish because of the simplicity of its preparation. One-pot-wonders, as he calls them, mean lesscleanup. This dish can be prepared on your EarthCruiser’s induction cooktop, over a fire in adutch oven, in an instant pot, or conventional oven. - [How to Stay Healthy While Overlanding](https://earthcruiser.com/how-to-stay-healthy-while-overlanding/): Preparing for an overland adventure means creating plans for taking care of ourvehicles and equipment. This is often the focus of discussions, and it’s easy to forget toplan for the most important element in your vehicle: you. Life on the road is joyful, but itcan also be tiring and challenging. After all, if it were always easy, it wouldn’t feel like anadventure. Here are a few ways to ensure you’re taking care of yourself as well as youtake care of your EarthCruiser: - [EarthCruiser Becomes Official Partner of Tread Lightly! to Promote Responsible Outdoor Recreation](https://earthcruiser.com/earthcruiser-becomes-official-partner-of-tread-lightly-to-promote-responsible-outdoor-recreation/): At EarthCruiser outdoor stewardship is one of our most important missions. They are a national nonprofit with a mission to promote responsible recreation through stewardship programs and ethics education.  - [An Introduction to International Vehicle Shipping](https://earthcruiser.com/an-introduction-to-international-vehicle-shipping/): At some point, you may find yourself needing to ship your EarthCruiser, whether it’s for moving overseas, transporting it to Cape Town for the start of an epic African safari, or for hopping the Darien Gap on your way to the southern tip of the Americas. While the logistics of such an endeavor can seem daunting, you can take comfort in knowing EarthCruisers were designed with this need in mind. - [The Festive German Christmas Market Scene](https://earthcruiser.com/the-festive-german-christmas-market-scene/): I’ve always enjoyed the lead up to Christmas more than the actual holiday, and this year I convinced Lance that we needed to go to Germany for the Christmas markets, which I had read so much about. Fortunately, he agreed, and so off we went. This was another one of those non EarthCruiser holidays (although it would have been a fantastic EarthCruiser adventure) where I could revel in meals cooked for me and housework that I didn’t need to do. - [Meet the Crew: Tyler Wild](https://earthcruiser.com/meet-the-crew-tyler-wild/): Tyler Wild knows good design. You can currently find him in the Production department at EarthCruiser. - [EC Co-Founder Michelle Boltz: Cooking in your EarthCruiser](https://earthcruiser.com/ec-co-founder-michelle-boltz-cooking-in-your-earthcruiser/): As we all know, I really like to travel, and part of that is because I really like to eat and try new things. It doesn’t have to be exotic, and it doesn’t have to be ‘ethnic,’ it can just be things that I am not used to cooking at home. In America, there are so many regional foods that we may not know about them if we don’t live there. I’d never cooked crawfish until we were driving our EarthCruiser through the south. I probably won’t do it again because they were really fiddley, but I’m glad I did. Sometimes it’s just things like different cuts of meat. We were in western Canada in our EarthCruiser, and the supermarket had lamb backstrap and lamb loin, both cuts that are difficult to find in my grocery store. I had to buy them, but unfortunately, US customs had a different idea and took them from me before I had a chance to indulge. Something about a long-running spat with Canada over lamb. - [Meet The Crew: The Waytes](https://earthcruiser.com/meet-the-crew-the-waytes/): Mat and Ellen Wayte are recent additions to the EarthCruiser crew.
