San Diego to Cabo

What you'll do

Starting just outside San Diego, this Adventure leads us over the border down the full length of the Baja Peninsula. We’ll visit mountain oases, hidden hotsprings, stunning beaches, ancient caves, rugged volcanos, and cacti forest. Along the way, we’ll take in delicious local cuisine, have the chance to swim with the world’s largest fish, paddle hidden bays, and, of course, drive some incredible roads. We’ll end just outside San Jose del Cabo, at a beautiful local farm with treehouse accommodation.

Ellen Wayte has spent over a decade working in tourism as an overlanding tour leader, scuba instructor, naturalist, park ranger, and concierge. As a tour leader, she has led adventure holidays through over 40 countries on five continents. She has guided clients on expeditions from Cape Town to Cairo, across the Silk Road, throughout South America, and the Indian subcontinent. She is passionate about wildlife and can often be found with binoculars in hand.

ITINERARY:*

Day 1 Cleveland National Forest, California, Tuesday, October 25

We begin our adventure in the scenic Cleveland National Forest area. You are free to arrive to the campground at any time on the 25th. At 6pm you will meet your new traveling companions for a pre-departure meeting and group meal cooked by EarthCruiser staff.

Day 2 Guadalupe Canyon, Mexico, Wednesday, October 26

This morning we’ll cross the border into Mexico. From there we’ll drive through the scenic, twisty La Rumorosa road over the Sierras. We’ll leave the pavement and onto a gravel road to our campground in the mountains, featuring our very own hot springs pool for the evening.

Day 3 Sea of Cortez Beach Camp, Mexico, Thursday, October 27

Today we drive east and find ourselves camping on a beach on the Sea of Cortez. We’ll have dinner tonight at a small local restaurant run by a small Mexican vineyard, where we’ll have a wine tasting and local meal.

Day 4 Baja Interior Camp, Mexico, Friday, October 28, 2022

This morning we’ll follow the Sea of Cortez, through the Valle de Los Gigante, an area known for its incredible cacti. We’ll make a stop at the famous “Coco’s Corner” – a landmark for Baja travelers. From there, we’ll leave the pavement and head up into the hills to camp for the night.

Day 5 Bahia del los Angeles, Mexico, Friday, October 28, 2022

Today we’ll divert onto a rough rock and sand road to visit the historic and isolated Misión San Francisco Borja. This evening we will camp on the beach at the gorgeous Bahia de los Angeles, known for its still, shallow waters, and excellent, swimmable beaches.

Day 6 San Ignacio Area, Mexico, Sunday, October 30,

This morning we’ll head inland, crossing over the peninsula to the Pacific Ocean. After lunch, we’ll take a small rural road onto the dirt and towards the mountains. This evening we’ll go on a guided walk to the UNESCO world heritage site of the Rock Paintings of the Sierra de San Francisco.

Day 7 Sea of Cortez Beach Camp, Mexico, Monday, October 31

Today we’ll make a stop at the beautiful central plaza of historic San Ignacio. From there, we’ll continue east to visit the volcanic area of Tres Virgenes, where we’ll go on a short, guided walk. In the afternoon, we will visit an Eiffel-designed metal on our way back to the Sea of Cortez to camp along another beautiful beach.

Day 8 Loreto, Mexico November 1, 2022

Today we’ll continue down the coast of the Sea of Cortez. We’ll arrive at the town of Loreto by mid-day, where those interested can partake in an optional afternoon sunset paddleboard or kayak. Others may opt for a stroll or bike ride down the town’s Melecon or to simply relax at our beachside camp.

Day 9 La Paz, Mexico Wednesday, November 2

Today we will leave the highway and take rugged, dirt roads across the interior, stopping at a gorgeous early 18th century Spanish Mission. We end the day near the bustling city of La Paz. Tonight we will be treated to an incredible evening of Day of the Dead celebrations, full of music, dancing, and a traditional Catrinas (elegantly dressed skeleton figures) contest.

Day 10 Cabo Pulmo, Mexico Thursday, November 3

This morning is set aside for an optional snorkeling trip in the bay to see the world’s largest fish: whale sharks. After lunch, we’ll embark on a gorgeous drive along gravel roads skirting the coast with hidden beaches and quiet bays. This evening we will camp near a small off-grid community in Cabo Pulmo National Park.

Day 11 San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, Friday, November 4

Morning optional scuba diving or snorkeling in the incredible Cabo Pulmo National. Jacque Cousteau dubbed the area “The World’s Aquarium.” After lunch, we’ll drive the rugged, bumpy gravel coastal road, ending at a small, private farm for our final night together. Here we will enjoy an exclusive farm-to-table meal to celebrate our adventure. Evening tonight will be in the farm’s treehouse accommodation.

Day 12 San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, Saturday, November 5

A light breakfast is included in your stay this morning as we say goodbye.

If you would like to continue your time in the San Jose del Cabo area, there is no shortage of things to do in the area. From golf to sportfishing, there are active adventures abound, or just spend your time enjoying the dining and nightlife options in Cabo San Lucas.

Spare tire and full set of Maxtrax recovery board

Basic recovery gear including Snatch Block, Tree Saver, one pair each hard and soft shackles, and gloves.

INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
