Jindabyne Holiday Park: right in town but quiet in the camping area – a top spot next to granite boulders, snowgums; all this and a glorious view of the lake. Ranks alongside Glen Innes as one of the best commercial campsites in Australia (so far). Also, the only park (other than the other Jindabyne park) with heated amenities that we have come across

The track from Lake Cobbler to Camp Creek below the Ausralian Alpine Track at Mt Speculation starts out rough and gets rougher. From the point where Lake Cobbler Track meets Speculation Track, the road is described on the national parks sign as ‘Difficult: dry conditions’

Just inside South West National Park: you need a ‘Parks Pass’ to take your vehicle into the park, and to walk, but no camping fees! Uncommon for Tasmania where the usual onvernight fee is $13

Mount Wellington and EC6 are bathed in the golden glow of the dying sun

Early morning on Mersey Bluff after disembarking from the ferry. EC6, and a group of early morning exercisers, greet our first morning in Devonport

The whole campground was more moss than grass. I have a theory about the geology of Tasmania – the whole state is comprised of moss bog. Except for the tops of mountains and the seashore which are lichen-covered granite

The 80 kilometer stretch between the Arthur River and and Corrina, on the Pieman River was more bare than I expected. We passed through occassional large stands of forest. The ridges and forest of the Tarkine to the east but most was reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands with rolling bare mountains and large tracts of grass and heather

A roadside camp just before Mt Wellington’s final short, sharp pitch to its summit. Check out the road which goes directly over the highest point. The final section is quite steep and very rough. EC6 could have done it but late in the day, Greg was just not up to it. Three stars just for the sheer wildness of the location

The great little caravan park at Wandilogong is another ‘five star’ campsite. Acres of green grass with creek frontage to choose from. Prime real estate for twenty dollars a night

Love this place – Beutel’s Lookout lies between Crows Nest and Esk in Ravensbourne National Park. The route is the most direct way returning home from ‘down south’, branching off the New England Highway just before Crows Nest and heading down the mountains to Esk in the Brisbane Valley

After a week on the roads north of Licola, we had the pick of a nice grassy area in the Licola Caravan Park overlooking the MacAlister River from which to regroup. Blazing sun, the hills just starting to brown as I remember them around Corryong when we passed through on the BMW thirty-two years ago. Three stars, more if it was free
