Baja XL Rally 2019

What it took to get our Tacoma with a MOD camper ready for the Baja XL Rally

Like the Joe Cocker song, we had a little help from our friends. Just a few weeks ago we had a mainly stock 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 that was getting a MOD camper fit to it for the Baja XL Rally. While the Tacoma is a great truck, it would be taking a big risk to trust a stock truck to complete this rally. If you read our previous blog, you’ll understand what events like these demand from a vehicle. The Baja XL Rally is a race that challenges your navigating ability, not speed. We needed to outfit our Tacoma

First Glimpse of MOD and EXD

We are super excited to share photos of the first MOD and EXD products to our EarthCruiser audience. It took a huge effort from the crew, and it will all pay off once these beautiful vehicles get on the road. If you are looking for unique, there is nothing constructed quite like these campers. They are lightweight but rugged, simple but highly innovative, and just look damn good on any truck it’s mounted to. We’ll be putting up dedicated webpages soon, but check out the gallery below for pictures of the builds.

Trying to Stay MODest…

But We’re Really Excited!! What a show! 2018 Overland Expo West did not disappoint this year, with over 365 vendors and double the attendance from 2017. It was non-stop, dusty, hot, and full of cool vehicles and gear that got a lot of attention. Including our MOD prototype! The humble MOD won’t share this, but people couldn’t stop talking about it and wanting to peek inside. The MODular interior concept gained a lot of attention, and everyone shared tons of ideas on how they would outfit it. Within a week after the show it was put on 4 lists of

MOD makes it to Overland Expo

The MOD prototype is loaded, and on its trek to Overland Expo in Flagstaff, AZ. It’s Friday night and a final turn of the allen wrench secures the dinette seat kit to the MOD proto-type. Mounted on our shop Tundra, it is ready for the 1,100 mile journey to Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, AZ. As the sun was setting we pulled it out of the shop, and parked it next to pro mountain biker Ryan Leech’s beautiful Ram PowerWagon carrying his newly outfitted GZL 400. The white to grey contrast during sunset was great to capture, and it was

Nobody Puts MOD in the Corner

We Begin Our Prototyping with a Retired GZL Shell “It’s time to start building!”, Lance said as we were finalizing the last few SolidWorks files. This jump from concept to proto-type always gets our engineers nervous. Hoping that everything was thought through, calculated out, and will line up is the dream but never the reality. By noon the next day a stack of plywood showed up, and our crew began cutting shapes on our C&C machine. Why plywood? Because it is cheap and easy to take a computer design and see how it feels when it is a tangible structure.

MOD: One Shell of an Idea

Sharon, the owner of Aroma Coffee Hut down the street from EarthCruiser HQ, is a pretty happy camper these days. Why? Well mostly because of the amount of coffee we are consuming these days to make sure all is prepared for Overland Expo West, but also because she helped plant a seed in our overly caffeinated minds. Since the release of the GZL truck camper back in October 2017, most customers have been overly satisfied with the premium options it comes standard with. There is, however, a growing contingent of interested people who love the GZL concept but don’t need
