A Tribute to My Little Girl, Goldy

I was supposed to write a travel story this month, and this is sort of one, but I just need to make a little ode to my Goldy. Goldy was Lance and my ‘compromise’ dog after we got married. Lance didn’t want a dog, and I did, so we signed up to be puppy raisers for Guide Dogs Queensland…a one-year commitment to ‘raising’ a puppy that could go anywhere, do anything, and not be phased by new experiences. We got Goldy—a small English lab with a big attitude.  She was a fearless little witch who loved the supermarket (especially the

The Festive German Christmas Market Scene

I’ve always enjoyed the lead up to Christmas more than the actual holiday, and this year I convinced Lance that we needed to go to Germany for the Christmas markets, which I had read so much about. Fortunately, he agreed, and so off we went. This was another one of those non EarthCruiser holidays (although it would have been a fantastic EarthCruiser adventure) where I could revel in meals cooked for me and housework that I didn’t need to do. This visit we decided we’d stay north so we headed off to Cologne, our first market on our first night!

Cold Weather Camping

Cold weather camping isn’t for everyone; there are many who tolerate it begrudgingly, or flat out refuse to consider going at all. Then there are the dedicated adventurers who can’t bear a winter without the tranquility only a campfire under the stars can provide. They look forward to the crisp air, seclusion, and the apprehensive thrill that accompanies driving on a snowy forest service road you hope is passable. Along with invigoration, cold weather camping provides challenges that prevent many from venturing out this time of year. Although bugs and overcrowded lakes are unlikely to cause frustration, temperatures below freezing

Thick greens, lush leaves, and undulating grounds await you. Welcome to the 2019 Borneo Equator Expedition. This mysterious place lulls you into its home, only to show you its challenging and sometimes treacherous environment when you least expect it. Mud holes and deep v-notches, severe humidity and torrential rain, along with trying long days lie ahead— during the 2019 Borneo Equator Expedition the jungle in Borneo beckons you to be a visitor. The jungle stands proud, only to accept the willing and capable to traverse through it successfully. You need to pave your own way, but only if she allows

Testing Out the New Garmin Overlander GPS Tablet

This spring Garmin released a new gps tablet aimed at the Overlander market at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, AZ. Although the first release to the public isn’t planned until August 8th, they sent a few out for people to test. We were lucky enough to be among the few who got this chance, although we only received it on July 19th. Having limited opportunities to test the unit, I decided to use it during a trip to the Rocky Mountain Overland Rally in Gunnison, CO. Traveling primarily on paved highway, and only camping remotely one night, I cannot say

Traveling Overland in the Winter

Celebrating the Season – How to Best Prepare for Winter Overland Travel The holiday season in North America normally is a time where most places get chilly, see snow, and roads become impassible. However that may be, it is also a great time to travel to certain places because they are less crowded, and offer a completely different experience and beauty. If the inner adventurer in you is planning to take advantage of these times, just make sure you are most prepared for potential harsh winter conditions. Remember that every vehicle is at the wrath of Old Man Winter, but
