Baja XL: Days 5 – 7

Fun in the Sun Ahhhh Baja Sur. Right break waves, white sand beaches, volcanic mountain ranges, and epic dirt roads. With the temperature averaging around 82 degrees Fahrenheit each day, I can easily see why this place is becoming the snow-birding central of the west. We’ve run into more gringos enjoying the sun than locals, and English is almost the primary language down here. Day 5: As the sun was rising on Day 5, John and myself were already taking in the views of the Pacific from a lonely sand dune close to our beach camp. The group made the

Baja XL: Days 1 – 4

The adventure begins! Sitting inside an internet cafe in La Paz I can attribute that the terrain is not the only thing remote in Baja. My expectation to post daily quickly changed as soon as we traveled past Tecate. The internet connections are sparse and slow, as is the culture on this wonderful peninsula. As soon as the race started it was an adventure, but in a way no one wanted. Los Angeles traffic was HELL, and trying to work our way to the border was less than thrilling. Bumper to bumper on an 8 lane highway all the way

Pre-Race Scrutineering

Getting race ready… or just having a beer. As Chad and I pull into the Residence Inn at Redondo Beach, it feels like we are entering the set of the next Mad Max movie. Every parking spot taken by bikes, buggy’s, SUVs, small trucks, large trucks, REALLY large trucks, and even some sports cars outfitted with off-road tires. Racing gear is everywhere, people are changing tires, fixing suspension, or already searching for the last beer in the ice of their cooler. Finding the EarthCruiser crew, it wasn’t too hard, we had a quick chat then headed inside the hotel for

What it took to get our Tacoma with a MOD camper ready for the Baja XL Rally

Like the Joe Cocker song, we had a little help from our friends. Just a few weeks ago we had a mainly stock 2016 Toyota Tacoma SR5 that was getting a MOD camper fit to it for the Baja XL Rally. While the Tacoma is a great truck, it would be taking a big risk to trust a stock truck to complete this rally. If you read our previous blog, you’ll understand what events like these demand from a vehicle. The Baja XL Rally is a race that challenges your navigating ability, not speed. We needed to outfit our Tacoma

World Class Events Require World Class Vehicles

We are only a few days away from the start of the Baja XL Rally, which is twice the length of the Baja 1000 and travels across many of the same off-road routes. The terrain is rough, and the organizers make sure the the days are long. This normally spells disaster for many racers, who can only hope for a tow and a good team to keep them running. If you are into the off-road racing scene you know the toll these events can have on a vehicle, its driver, and the support crew. Having raced, chased, and photographed off-road

Baja XL Rally – Team EarthCruiser

T-minus 23 days until the Baja XL Rally begins. As our excitement builds for the start of the rally, we thought you’d like to know a bit more about us, and the other EC owners going. Team Leaders: Lance Gillies and Michelle Boltz are the founders of EarthCruiser, and will be leading the caravan through the Baja. While neither of them has driven the Baja before, their experience with travelling across remote places and over rugged terrain is extensive. Lance started out building road trains in Australia, and was well known as a competitive 4×4 enthusiast competing in many international

Planning for Baja Begins

Border Crossings and Packing Lists… Let the Baja XL Rally planning begin! I know. I know. We are a bit late to start planning for this rally, but it’s been a busy year. When we finally got a chance to carve out some time, we started to realize there wasn’t too much planning to do. Our number one priority is that everyone has a good time, stays safe, and we keep the boarder crossings easy. Also, since we are taking our 2016 Tacoma, there is some work that needs done to it, as it is not Baja ready… more to

Traveling Overland in the Winter

Celebrating the Season – How to Best Prepare for Winter Overland Travel The holiday season in North America normally is a time where most places get chilly, see snow, and roads become impassible. However that may be, it is also a great time to travel to certain places because they are less crowded, and offer a completely different experience and beauty. If the inner adventurer in you is planning to take advantage of these times, just make sure you are most prepared for potential harsh winter conditions. Remember that every vehicle is at the wrath of Old Man Winter, but

Experience The Difference of the EXD Camper

If you’ve been following our blog and social media pages, you’ve well seen the release of our newest EarthCruiser vehicle, the EXD camper. A few blogs back we compared 1 ton trucks to popular conversion vans. Like we said in the blog, we love the van life concept, and the EXD is how EarthCruiser would do vanlife! Since the release of the EXD we’ve been getting a lot of questions regarding what makes it such an amazing machine. Most recently Truck Camper Adventure (TCA) asked to interview Lance about what makes it different. Below is some of the dialog… TCA:
